Updating health card
You can apply for Alberta Health Care anytime during this waiting period, but the effective date will be the first day of the third month after your arrival in Alberta.
During this waiting period, you may have to pay your health provider out of your own pocket and then apply to your home province for reimbursement, but it’s best to ask the health provider before the start of service – some providers may be able to direct bill to other provinces.
If you are moving or returning to Alberta from outside Canada, you might be eligible for coverage on the date of your arrival when you register within 3 months of arrival and provide all the required documents.
If your spouse and dependants arrive before 12 months, coverage will be effective for everyoneon the first day of the third month after they arrive or the first of the thirteenth month for you, whichever comes first.

If at all possible, we will provide you with a temporary card on the spot. For example, a Canadian passport Or PR Card can prove Identity as well as Legal Status in Canada. Identity documents with no expiry date must have an issue date no more than 10 years in the past.
If you are in Alberta temporarily for the purpose of attending school full-time and plan to return to your home province or territory afteryour studies, you must maintain your health insurance coverage with your home province or territory.
If you are in Alberta temporarily for the purpose of work, and maintain your home in another province or territory and return home regularly, you should maintain your health insurance coverage in your home province or territory.
